I’ve just redesigned and updated my niche web directory called RSS Feeds Directory, a directory where you can submit your RSS/XML News Feed for free.

I chose a fresher more lively feel for the site as it was getting a bit tired looking.

I have also changed from using the PHPLD directory software to run the database to the Joomla CMS and the SOBI2 directory script. I believe this will give me more flexibility over adding new features, such as advertising space, articles and more.

I’ve finally got round to creating a new design for this blog.

I’d really, really appreciate it if you’d leave some comments with constructive feedback on how it looks, how useable it is and maybe any improvements I could make. Thanks.

There are many web directories around that offer free links. This often seems like a great idea. However, you may be unaware that many of these use this attribute when providing free links.

So what is it and why should you be bothered?

According to Wikipedia

“nofollow is an HTML attribute value used to instruct some search engines that a hyperlink should not influence the link target’s ranking in the search engine’s index. It is intended to reduce the effectiveness of certain types of search engine spam, thereby improving the quality of search engine results and preventing spamdexing from occurring.”

A link using the attribute rel=”nofollow” is not completely useless, visitors can still visit your web site through a link using this attribute, however you will be losing out when it comes to link popularity and search engine rankings.

What can you do about it?

First check out if the directory you are thinking of submitting to is using this attribute for its free links. If it is, pay for your listing if your link submission is mainly about building up Link Popularity.

If it is more about just being found on the internet then your free link may be useful even if it has nofollow.

At the end of the day a free link is a free link. If you have the time to submit it then go ahead. I have been amazed at the traffic that has come from weird, seemingly unknown directories.

I’ve just added a new download to the Sound FX category. It’s a short sample of dry leaves burning. It starts with a sudden burst as they ignite and dies down to a crackle.  Check it out in the Downloads section.

I’ve just gone back to using the Wordpress ‘Classic’ Theme for this blog. This is hopefully just a temporary measure as I am updating both the content and the design. I just thought it would be better to go for something simple and useable while I re-design. But for now I want to concentrate on updating the content, which is I hope why people visit the site, and want to stay focused.

I am going to include more detail on the web design and multimedia services I provide.

I’ve just added a new page for housing all of the downloads on the site. I’ve started with a category for web design related things. The first file is a PDF file called ‘Planning Your Web Site‘, designed to help you think about the process of developing a web site.

In time I hope to add more categories and files, such as a section of audio loops, samples and video clips.
