PostHeaderIcon What is the ‘nofollow’ attribute?

There are many web directories around that offer free links. This often seems like a great idea. However, you may be unaware that many of these use this attribute when providing free links.

So what is it and why should you be bothered?

According to Wikipedia

“nofollow is an HTML attribute value used to instruct some search engines that a hyperlink should not influence the link target’s ranking in the search engine’s index. It is intended to reduce the effectiveness of certain types of search engine spam, thereby improving the quality of search engine results and preventing spamdexing from occurring.”

A link using the attribute rel=”nofollow” is not completely useless, visitors can still visit your web site through a link using this attribute, however you will be losing out when it comes to link popularity and search engine rankings.

What can you do about it?

First check out if the directory you are thinking of submitting to is using this attribute for its free links. If it is, pay for your listing if your link submission is mainly about building up Link Popularity.

If it is more about just being found on the internet then your free link may be useful even if it has nofollow.

At the end of the day a free link is a free link. If you have the time to submit it then go ahead. I have been amazed at the traffic that has come from weird, seemingly unknown directories.

PostHeaderIcon YAWD - (Yet Another Web Directory)

Yep! Just couldn’t live without putting together another Web Directory. This time it’s totally free, which is why I called it Totally Free Directory. From this you can probably guess the URL for the site, but in case you haven’t it’s www.totallyfreedirectory.com

It’s really free to submit your own web site or blog so why not do it now and build up your site’s Link Popularity.

PostHeaderIcon Traffic to Global Search Directory Has Rocketed!!

Alexa Traffic Rank ChartI’m pleased to say that traffic to the Directory has really grown massively over the last few weeks, with a steady increase week by week. Using data about the site from the Alexa ranking system it shows that the Traffic Ranking is currently 455,645. That might not sound great really but when you consider that only a few weeks ago it was over 2 million, you can see that traffic has really grown.

So, what can I conclude from this? Rather than blowing my own trumpet and saying ‘well done’, I can conclude that this growth is due in part to: Ongoing Link Building - the rather tedious process of looking for link exchanges, reciprocal links and listings in Web Directories is vital in building traffic and Link Popularity. So, if you are finding this hard and boring all I can say is keep going! It’s hard work but it pays off. Lastly, don’t get complacent and think that you have arrived. I don’t want my ranking to stay at 455,645.

PostHeaderIcon More detailed statistics for links at Global Search Directory

I have added the Link Popularity Widget Mod v 1.2 to the directory. This allows you to see information about a link in the directory, such as Alexa ranking, number of pages indexed by Google, Yahoo and MSN. It also shows if the site is indexed in the DMOZ or Yahoo directories. You can see more about the Mod at www.trsites.com/articles/article-20.html, and download it if you run a Directory site powered by PHPLink Directory.

You can see this information when you click the ‘detail’ link of a specific site in the directory. This is important information if you are considering contacting a site for reciprocal linking or advertising as you will be able to see which sites are getting high levels of traffic.
